Mental Health Recovery Practitioner

Build on your diploma or degree in health, human services, or social services with focused mental health training, and make a real difference in the lives of those facing mental health challenges. Gain the knowledge and skills to identify and understand mental health needs and support clients navigate mental health systems.

What to expect from the program

The program emphasizes acquisition of applied skills and best practices in direct client care, advocacy, ethics, and work with families and communities. You'll build on your previous training and expertise to deepen your ability to support individuals with mental health and concurrent disorders. You'll gain applied skills and best practices in areas like direct client care, advocacy, ethics, and working with families and communities.

You will learn:

  • Foundational knowledge in mental health and concurrent disorders
  • Recovery practitioner skills and mental health first aid
  • Ethics, advocacy, and navigating health systems
  • Crisis and suicide intervention

The program is offered in a flexible format, combining online courses with evening and weekend classroom instruction

Graduate with experience

NorQuest College believes in the importance of on-the-job experience that provides an enriched learning opportunity. A key component of the Mental Health Recovery Practitioner program is practical application and debriefing in class and practicum. 

You’ll graduate from this program with 120 hours of work experience from a practicum and 15 hours of community service learning.

A method of course delivery where both online and in-person/real-time instruction are required components.

The Mental Health Recovery Practitioner program will provide a viable career pathway for those entering the mental health field. You'll graduate ready to meet the needs of both clients and employers in a variety of settings, including treatment centres, hospitals and healthcare facilities, community services, non-profit support agencies, and more. Graduates of the Mental Health Recovery Practitioner program may pursue further education at the bachelor’s and master’s level, in areas such as social work, addictions, mental health, program administration, management and/or research.

Most employers in this field expect excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Recognition of international education to meet employment qualifications will vary based on employer.
