Get ready for your transition to the world of employment. This 10-month program is designed to provide employment preparation training for adults with mild developmental disabilities. Our post-secondary setting enables learners to further their education beyond high school to transition to the workforce.
Part of the reason I took the program is because there may be things you want, but aren’t necessarily good at. After some time in the program, the instructors thought I would be suited for this placement. I believe it is helping me.
Through a combination of classroom and workplace instruction, you will get training on current equipment, an understanding of current workplace practices, food safety and handling skills, and independent living skills including financial literacy and budgeting. Your self-confidence and marketable skills will increase while receiving ongoing, intensive support and mentoring from college faculty and staff.
During the classroom portion (term 1) of the program, you will take part in job safety skills, workplace communication, career planning, and employment preparation. You will also have the opportunity to take part in community-based learning events including various field trips and volunteer opportunities.
The work experience (in terms 2 and 3) is critical in assisting you get real-world, hands-on, practical training. By experiencing work in variety of local businesses that you are interested in, you will gain valuable skills and business connections.
NorQuest College believes in the importance of on-the-job experience that provides an enriched learning opportunity.
You’ll graduate from this program with 450 hours of work experience. Your work terms will be in:
Term 2: January – April
Three days per week: Monday – Wednesday
Term 3: May – June
Three-five days per week: Monday – Friday
You are expected to be able to work at least five hours per day.

Classes are held in a classroom with face-to-face instruction and regularly scheduled meeting times.
Graduates of this program find jobs in a variety of fields, including food service, warehousing, and other service industries. The objective of this program is to provide eligible individuals with training, guidance, and work experience that will contribute directly to their ability to get employment and establish and maintain independence.
