What to expect from the program

During the 27-week program, you will learn anatomy and physiology, microbiology, infection prevention and control, workplace communication, and the procedures necessary for work as a medical device reprocessing technician. 

Upon completion of the program, graduates are ready to challenge the Certified Medical Device Reprocessing Technician exam offered by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). Students are also eligible to write the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association’s Certified Registered Central Service Technician certification exam

NorQuest College believes in the importance of on-the-job experience that provides an enriched learning opportunity. 

You’ll graduate from this program with 400 hours of work experience from a practicum. 


Your delivery option

To support your learning experience, this program is offered in the following format:

Online real-time w/ in-person labs

Classes follow a set schedule and require you to attend live, online sessions at specific dates and times. Labs are completed in person at scheduled locations. 


Additional information

NorQuest College is one of only a few training providers for medical device reprocessing training in Canada recognized by the Canadian Standards Association. This association is the Canadian certifying body that issues the national certified medical device reprocessing technician credential.

You will need a high school diploma or equivalent (e.g. CAEC) to apply to take the certification exam. Email the CSA at training@csagroup.org if you have any questions about meeting the prerequisite to complete the certification exam.


Career opportunities

Graduates of this program have opportunities to work in the medical device reprocessing departments of hospitals and in other health facilities that reuse medical equipment and instruments. The medical device reprocessing field is growing steadily with an increasing demand for well-trained technicians to work in the health industry.

What to expect as a medical device reprocessing technician 

You are more likely to be successful in this career if you: 

  • Are physically able to manage workplace demands (e.g. standing for long periods of time, able to lift up to 16 kg/35 lbs, push or pull up to 45 kg/100 lbs) 
  • Are able to work shift work, including evenings and weekends 
  • Work well in a team environment and have good communication skills 
  • Are able to perform repetitive tasks for long periods of time 
  • Are comfortable working with blood and other biomaterials
