Planning for family and community

You can always go home.

In Monica Janvier’s case, home is the Cold Lake First Nation. It was 10 years ago that she left, looking for to find her way in Alberta’s capital city. Now, as a second year Business Admin student at NorQuest College, she would like to come full circle and return to her ancestral home to be an example and a mentor.

“When I graduate I want to go back to Cold Lake and work with the band office there and help people succeed,” says the 27-year-old, who is currently studying at the college’s Edmonton Downtown Campus. “Or at least I want to help people find the line that is stopping them from getting an education.”

Janvier’s own educational journey began at NorQuest as a part time student in Academic Upgrading in 2006. Patiently, she progressed and graduated in 2010 with the credits she needed for acceptance into the Business Admin program.

After another few years off to be with her child during his youngest years she is now back again, this time to fulfill a promise she made to herself years ago: To become a college graduate.  She is scheduled to receive her diploma in the spring of 2015. And like many NorQuest graduates, Janvier is confident in the skills taught to her and is ready to take the next step in finding a career.

“Thanks to my NorQuest education I have a great chance of getting a job,” she says.

I want to help people succeed. Or at least I want to help people find the line that is stopping them from getting an education.
