This course develops students’ practical skills and critical awareness for responding to violence and crisis across diverse social work settings. Grounded in gender-based analysis and critical social work theory, the course examines how intersecting systems of oppression shape experiences of violence, vulnerability, and crisis. Using trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and strengths-based approaches, students learn practical strategies to diffuse tension, de-escalate conflicts, and maintain safety for themselves and those in their care. Emphasis is placed on risk assessment, safety planning, debriefing, self-regulation, and self-care to support ethical and sustainable practice. Topics include exploitation, domestic violence, suicide, and self-harm. Students critically reflect on societal norms, power relations, and the social construction of safety while building skills in crisis response, advocacy, and ethical decision-making.
