Meet the team

Matthew "AmazingMollusk" Weir
Justice
"Good e."
Matthew first discovered NorQuest Esports on his first day at the college when he saw the Heroes program being advertised and it immediately caught his attention. Drawn to the idea of playing games competitively while connecting with others on campus, he joined to challenge himself and have fun in a school setting.
His gamertag, "AmazingMollusk," is a name he came up with when he was around 12 years old, and it’s stuck with him ever since. In Rivals, Matthew likes to strike a balance between dealing solid damage and supporting his teammates, showing versatility and a team first mindset.
Outside of gaming, Matthew enjoys trading card games like Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh!, as well as building Gunpla models. His experience in communication focused jobs helps him contribute to team coordination and create a positive environment during matches.
Thinking about joining? Matthew says, "If you want to, do it."

Derek "EDHCommander" Broad
Justice
"Life is too short to be normal!"
Derek first got involved with NorQuest Esports after being recommended and recruited during the school’s orientation at the beginning of the year. A dedicated Marvel Rivals fan, he joined to experience competition on an official level and because, as he puts it, "there’s nothing but benefit to joining." The social connections, competitive play, and scholarship opportunities all made it an easy decision.
His gamertag, "EDHCommander," comes from Elder Dragon Highlander (EDH), a Magic: The Gathering format he regularly plays that’s also known as Commander. It’s a nod to his love for strategic gameplay and his passion for card-based competition.
In Marvel Rivals, Derek is known for his reliability and resilience as a tank player always willing to fill where needed but counted on to hold the frontline. His years of semi competitive experience across titles like Smite, Street Fighter, and Marvel Rivals have shaped him into a steady, dependable teammate.
Outside of gaming, Derek is an amateur novelist, an avid reader, and a casual philosopher. As one of the more experienced members of the team and a proud father he often embraces the role of "team dad," offering encouragement and perspective both in and out of matches.
Thinking about joining? Derek says, "Join! There is nothing but benefit, and personal performance is secondary to the camaraderie."

Inga "cooolinamaza" Paquette
Digital Information Careers
"Never give up on your interests or hobbies, even if you're not as good as you want to be yet. If you keep trying and put in the work and dedication, you will be eventually."
Inga first discovered NorQuest Esports at a campus fair, where she wandered past the booth before deciding to apply partly as a joke, thinking, "Wouldn’t it be pretty cool if I actually made it in?"
Her gamertag, cooolinamaza, originated when she was 8 while signing up for Animal Jam. Struggling to come up with a username, she randomly combined the first adjectives that came to mind "cool" and "amazing" and adjusted it until it stuck.
Although not a traditional shooter fan, Inga enjoys competitive rhythm games, particularly Project Sekai: Colorful Stage, where her precision and timing shine. Her teammates describe her as a quiet yet versatile player, capable of flexing between support, tank, and DPS roles.
Outside of gaming, Inga’s creativity flourishes through drawing, world building, creative writing, crocheting, knitting, model building, rhythm game charting, and working with Vocaloid adjacent programs. Her experience in customer service has helped her communicate effectively and support her team, while also teaching her patience and poise.
Inga encourages students to consider NorQuest Varsity: "I would definitely make sure you have more time than you think you do. Joining helped me realize a lot about myself, my schedule, and how I approach challenges."

Renand Abello "Betoman" Fulgueras
Early Learning and Child Care
"It's not what you do, it's how you do it." Kid David
Renand first discovered NorQuest Esports at the NorQuest Block Party. After asking questions and learning more about the program, he decided to try out for the team, eager to challenge himself and grow as a competitive player.
His gamertag, Betoman, is inspired by his dog, Beto (short for Diabeto), serving as a source of inspiration and support during matches. Renand’s favorite competitive game is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where he plays with a safe, calculated style gathering information and then switching to an aggressive approach to gain the upper hand.
Teammates recognize him as the "Support GOAT" for his reliability and game sense, while friends jokingly call him a "robot" or "cheater" for his calculated, consistent gameplay.
Outside of gaming, Renand teaches breakdancing to kids, competes in dance battles, and pursues creative projects in game development and design. His experiences have built resilience and mental strength, allowing him to contribute strategic insights and a positive attitude to the team.
Renand encourages students to join Varsity: "It’s a great opportunity to connect with like minded people who share your passion and to improve your skills in the game and in other areas of life."

Adrian De Jesus Torres Hernandez "Lzy_titan"
Open Studies
"Everyone makes mistakes; it’s the ones who learn from them that succeed."
Adrian first got involved with NorQuest Esports during CORE orientation, drawn by his longstanding desire to join an esports team since high school.
His gamertag, Lzy_titan2, combines a playful nod to his tendency to be a bit lazy outside of gaming with his admiration for the Vancouver Titans Overwatch team. In Marvel Rivals, Adrian has transitioned from playing tank roles to excelling as a DPS, focusing on poke characters and strategic plays.
Described by teammates as friendly, calm, and strategic, Adrian balances competitiveness with a supportive attitude. Outside of gaming, he enjoys studying, spending time with his son, and pursuing personal interests, which help him bring patience and leadership to his team.
Adrian encourages students considering Varsity: "Whatever title you decide to play, always keep a positive mindset."

Diamond Blaze "Bwrns" Burns
Indigenous Studies
Diamond first got involved with NorQuest Esports after hearing about tryouts while picking up books at the CORE. Intrigued by the idea of competitive gaming, he decided to give it a shot.
Her gamertag, Bwrns, is a creative twist on her last name, swapping the "u" for a "w." He excels in FC 26, where he demonstrates precision in passing and skill moves, and in Marvel Rivals, he plays aggressively, quickly learning new characters.
Teammates describe him as energetic and passionate, and outside of gaming, Diamond enjoys soccer, hanging out with friends, line dancing at country bars, and spending time with his close group.
Diamond encourages students to join Varsity: "It’s fun but really competitive. If you enjoy playing games and want to give it a shot, then I think it would be good."

Vinz "Pope Pius X" Balala
Engineering Transfer Certificate
"Salve Crux Pretiosa" Hail Precious Cross.
Vinz "Pope Pius X" Balala first connected with NorQuest Esports during the Block Party, where he discovered that Marvel Rivals and Tekken were among the featured titles. His passion for competitive gaming and his desire to test his skills in a team setting led him to join the Varsity program.
A proud practicing Catholic, Vinz chose his gamertag in honor of his favorite saint, Pope Pius X a name that reflects his faith and values both in and out of the game.
In Marvel Rivals, Vinz thrives in close range engagements and excels at ultimate timing and healing support. His energetic and vocal personality makes him an active communicator and motivator for his team.
Beyond gaming, Vinz enjoys attending Mass, helping with his youth group, practicing Taekwondo, and occasionally playing guitar or bass. These experiences have taught him collaboration, patience, and perseverance qualities he brings into every match.
When asked about joining Varsity, Vinz says, "Definitely go for it. Even if things don’t go as planned, you’ll learn a lot and make great friends along the way. The scholarship is a bonus but the community is what makes it worthwhile."
