NorQuest opens new Community Adult Learning Centre in Whitecourt

Adult learners in the Whitecourt and surrounding area can now enjoy a welcoming, physical space to begin or continue their learning, thanks to the opening of NorQuest College’s new Community Adult Learning Centre in October 2022.

“The Community Adult Learning Program (CALP) is often the first point of contact for adult foundational learners and has the crucial role of providing a non-threatening, flexible learning environment,” says CALP Team Lead Odette Lloyd. “Our team in Whitecourt helps to raise awareness and create a culture of lifelong learning in the communities we serve.”

CALP focuses on helping adults build their foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, basic digital skills, English language learning, and more. NorQuest’s CALP supports adults in Whitecourt, Woodlands County, and Lac Ste. Anne County.

The new community learning centre is located right in the heart of downtown Whitecourt in a convenient location. Adults can book an appointment, or drop in to access services like:

  • One-on-one/small group tutoring and study groups
  • Non-credit classes and workshops
  • Goal setting and planning for learning
  • Connections to post-secondary and career pathways
  • Referrals to other agencies (social supports, learning providers, community resources)

“One of the more popular programs is a math study group,” says Lloyd. “It’s great to see a cohort of adult learners work together with a tutor or facilitator on site.”

The English Conversation Cafe is also a hit with adults who want to improve their listening and speaking in English. Each week, small groups choose a topic to discuss, and an experienced English teacher helps lead the conversation. Participants learn new vocabulary, make new friends, and learn more about their community.

The new location features learning supports like free Wi-Fi, a Chromebook lending program (in partnership with the Whitecourt and District Public Library), access to computers, scanners, printers, stationary, and classroom supplies. And coffee is always available!

Located at 4907 51 Ave., across from Midtown Mall, the learning centre is open to adults of all educational backgrounds. The CALP team welcomes new learners and helps them reach their personal learning goals.
