Kognito

Virtual reality example of Kognito experience

Sometimes you might find yourself worrying about a friend who doesn’t seem to be doing well. It’s not always easy to know what to say or how to support someone who is going through a tough time. There are small, simple steps you can take to be there for a friend and to ensure that they get the help they need. It is helpful to be able to tell when a friend needs some extra mental health support.

Kognito for Students is an online tool that helps students to support their friends. You will learn about four different students, each struggling with a personal problem. You will then be able to interact with the students, learn how to ask the right questions, and come up with a solution.

You will receive help from a virtual coach who will give feedback along the way. By the end of the training you should feel more confident to support somebody who is struggling. You will also learn how to encourage a friend to get professional help if you are still worried about them.

Remember, you do not need to me an expert to help someone in need of mental health support. Everyone can learn the signs of distress and how to find help on campus when needed.

Kognito is free to use and you can complete it on any computer, tablet, or smart phone. You can start the training and leave at any time - the program will remember where you left off the next time you log in.

To complete the exercise:

  1. Go to the Kognito Campus website
  2. Create a new account
  3. Use enrolment key: nqstudents
  4. Launch At-Risk for Students

Note: Transcription access is available when using Kognito.

The training will take up to 45 minutes to complete, and you will receive a certificate for your records. We recommend using the following browsers for the best experience: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. The simulation will not work on Internet Explorer.

If you have any questions or concerns about Kognito, call the Centre for Growth & Harmony at 780.644.6155 or email wellness@norquest.ca.

As an employee at NorQuest College, there are small steps you can take in order to support students in need. The ability to recognize signs of distress, emotional disturbances, or the need for support can be vital in ensuring that our students receive the help they need, when they need it.

Kognito for Faculty & Staff is an online simulation designed to provide interactive scenarios for supporting students who may be in distress or deemed ‘at risk’. You will be taken through a series of situations and conversations with three different students, each with a unique area of concern. The program allows you to explore options of communication and ways of responding to the students’ conversations. You will receive feedback and suggestions along the way to help learn effective questioning and referral techniques, thus equipping you with tools to effectively support students in real life.

You are not required to be an expert in mental health, but to simply be aware of at-risk signs and to be confident in referring students to on-campus supports and services when needed.

The program is free to use, can be completed on any computer or smart device, and may be started or resumed at any time. This training, which is already in use at over 350 colleges and universities, is listed in the Suicide Prevention Resource Center’s Best Practices Registry.
