Starting January 2021, the Language for Health Care Aide Workplace pilot program will support newcomers and English language learners interested in the Health Care Aide Workplace program, but who do not meet the English language requirements.

Students will develop the English language skills needed to be successful in the Health Care Aide Workplace program and as practicing Health Care Aides.

This online, self-paced program allows students to choose when and how often they study and includes five courses that must be completed within 6 months of beginning the program. Students will learn how to take a multiple-choice exam and should expect to spend about 10 hours a week to complete the program in four months.

The course topics include:

  • Reading and writing
  • Listening and clear speaking
  • Communication on a health-care team
  • Communication with patients and families
  • Medical terminology

Eligible students must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents and must not be currently receiving Employment Insurance.

This program is funded by the Government of Alberta.
