Advance towards your Alberta high school diploma and build practical job skills at the same time. Earn up to 10 elective credits through short, one-credit courses designed to support your education and employment goals.

What is a Course credits

Learning geared towards a certificate or diploma, usually done course by course.

What to expect from the program

Earn Alberta Education high school credits through Career and Technology Studies (CTS) courses that build digital and career skills. Each course is worth one credit, and you can take as many courses as you need towards your Alberta high school diploma. These credits will appear on both your Alberta Education and NorQuest transcripts.

Select courses based on the credits you need for your high school diploma, the topics that interest you, or the skills you want to build for further education or employment.

Program delivery and supports

Each course must be completed in 15 weeks, with an average commitment of five hours per week. We recommend taking one course at a time.

Learn at your own pace with the online anytime format. If you need help, you'll have access to an instructor, accessibility services, and technical support for the online learning platform.

Who is this program for

These courses are designed for Alberta residents aged 20 and older* who want to earn credits towards an Alberta Education high school diploma, but they are also open to anyone interested in building digital and workplace skills.

*If you are under 20, you may be eligible for free Alberta Education high school courses at a registered high school in your area.

Program requirements

We recommend that you have English proficiency of CLB 7 and above.

Career and Workplace

  • CTR 1010 – Job Preparation 

    Develop successful employment search skills and a personal employment search portfolio. 

  • CTR 2010 – Job Maintenance 

    Explore workplace requirements, rights, and responsibilities and relate this knowledge to personal career and employment expectations. 

  • HSS 1090 – Speaking and Presenting 

    Develop effective communication, public speaking, and presentation skills. Create and deliver a speech or presentation and learn how to evaluate speeches using the principles of effective communication.

Digital Skills

Legal Studies

  • LGS 1010 – Private Law

    Explore workplace and consumer law with a focus on basic rights and responsibilities at a place of work and the legal aspects of buying, selling, and renting goods and services. 

  • LGS 1020 – Public Law

    Examine the legal relationship between the government and the citizen with an emphasis on criminal law. 

  • LGS 1030 – Relationship Law

    Study laws affecting family members through realistic scenarios and case studies. 

  • LGS 2010 – Family Law 

    Examine a broad range of legal issues relating to personal relationships. 

  • LGS 2040 – Aboriginal Law 

    Learn about the history of Aboriginal Law and its development in Canada by examining leading cases and challenging issues. 

  • LGS 3080 – Criminal Law 

    Examine the criminal justice system, including the criminal process and the roles and responsibilities of the participants. Students also explore challenging issues and law-related careers.
