Models and Practice from an Anti-Oppressive Perspective - SOWK 1040

Study concepts that address oppression and oppressed peoples, from a historical and a contemporary perspective and apply these concepts to social work practice models. Explore issues associated with internalized dominance and oppression. Apply different theories and perspectives to provide a framework for practice.

Note: Prerequisites: SOWK 1010, SOWK 1020, SOWK 1023. Restricted to Social Work.

This course introduces students to the theory and practice of anti-oppressive social work. Through critical self-reflection students will integrate anti-oppressive theories and skills, apply learning in diverse contexts, and develop concrete strategies to support diverse clients. Students will analyze forms of oppression, including, but not limited to, colonialism, racism, sexism, ableism, classism, and ageism. They will explore how these structures shape personal identity, professional practice, helping relationships and framing client problems.

This course is delivered in a classroom setting with face-to-face instruction at regularly scheduled times.
