Helping Skills - SOWK 1030

Build on theory and practice skills and integrate communication and interview skills with theoretical models and concepts to provide a framework for client assessment. Learn a systematic approach to effectively assess and intervene with clients.

Note: Prerequisites: SOWK 1010, SOWK 1020, SOWK 1023. Restricted to Social Work.

This course builds on the foundational helping process introduced in SOWK 1020 The Helping Process by focusing on practical application of core social work skills. Students will learn and practice skills in communication, building relationships, interviewing, assessment, ethical decision-making, documentation, and responding to diverse groups in respectful ways. The course begins to connect major social work theories with hands-on practice, including approaches based on Indigenous and non-Western perspectives.

Note: Prerequisites: SOWK 1010, SOWK 1020, SOWK 1023. Restricted to Social Work.


This course is delivered in a classroom setting with face-to-face instruction at regularly scheduled times.
