The Helping Process - SOWK 1020

Focus is on the helping process, which is the essence of social work practice. Examine the qualities and values of the helper in the context of multicultural practice. Study communication theory, techniques, and interviewing skills. Apply theory and skills to case studies and role-play scenarios.

Note: Co-requisite: SOWK 1010. Restricted to Social Work.

This course introduces students to the first steps in the helping process used in social work. It covers key communication skills, ways to build strong relationships, and important theories that support ethical and culturally respectful practice including Indigenous and non-Western approaches to helping. Through critical reflection, students will examine the use of self as a tool in practice. They will explore how these personal elements affect their professional identity, scope of practice, and how effective they are in helping others. The course also looks at legislation, power dynamics, and ethical issues that help distinguish helpful actions from harmful ones in different social work settings.

Note: Co-requisite: SOWK 1010. Restricted to Social Work.

This course is delivered in a classroom setting with face-to-face instruction at regularly scheduled times.
