Social Contexts in Disability Studies - DISB 2003

This course examines the societal contexts that shape disability and disability practice, including human rights, government legislation and regulations, advocacy, ethics, and guiding philosophies. Learners will critically analyze current events and emerging issues affecting people with disabilities, with attention to how legislation and policy function as tools for social change. The course also explores how poverty, systemic discrimination, environmental factors, and social conditions contribute to distress, marginalization, and increased risk of abuse. Learners will evaluate how societal structures, cultural narratives, and community responses influence well-being, safety, and equitable participation.

Note: Restricted to Disability Studies.


This course is delivered in a classroom setting with face-to-face instruction at regularly scheduled times.
