Charles Moyo
Medical Device Reprocessing Technician
Positive change can come at any age
A new country, a new school, a new career, and he did it all at 60 years of age.
Charles Moyo, now 61, arrived in Canada from Zimbabwe in 2016 with an idea of reinventing himself. A design technology teacher in his home country, he wanted something different for himself - something that would further connect him to his family, many of whom were already in Canada.
One of NorQuest College’s newest graduates of the Medical Device Reprocessing Technician program (MDRT), he has two daughters who are both nurses in Edmonton. His wife is currently enrolled in the Health Care Aide program at the college, and his mother and two brothers were also employed in the health industry.
“So it is a family calling for sure, and I wasn’t scared to go back to school,” he added, noting that the MDRT program is quick (just seven months) and thorough in its delivery. “I thought this would be a good motivator for my children and my grandchildren.”
Adding to that positive role model image was how quickly he went from student to professional. His determination landed him a job in just months after receiving his certificate and he is now employed at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. It’s the same place he completed his practicum while still a student.
“It is a wonderful place with good staff and good people,” he says. “And it feels so good to know you are playing a role in the treatment and recovery of patients. A speedy recovery requires safe equipment,” he adds.
