President’s Medal Winner makes every part of her student experience count by making a difference
May 26, 2025
The President’s Medal Winner, Rhecy Liwanag Reyes, is a student from NorQuest College’s Business Administration – Accounting diploma program. She will cross the stage at Convocation this June and is being recognized not only for her academic success, but also for her dedication to helping others and building a strong sense of community.
Originally from the Philippines, Rhecy moved to Canada with her family to pursue new opportunities and further education. With a professional experience in accounting and finance, she brought both expertise and passion to her studies. She chose NorQuest because of its practical, career-focused programs and the strong support it offers to newcomers adjusting to life in Canada.
Rhecy quickly became known for her strong academic performance. She maintained a high GPA and did especially well in courses such as Financial Accounting, Taxation, and Business Communications. What truly made her stand out was her active involvement in student life and the way she supported her classmates.
Throughout her time at NorQuest, Rhecy took on many roles where she gave her time and energy to support others. She volunteered at the Tax Clinic, where she helped students and newcomers file their tax returns. In her second year, she stepped up as a supervisor and mentored first-time volunteers. She was also chosen to represent NorQuest in its first off-campus Tax Clinic outreach held at Thrive Elementary School.
Rhecy served as an International Student Peer Mentor, helping new students adjust to their new environment. As a Career Centre Student Ambassador, she helped promote career resources and events. She also volunteered with the Students’ Association (SANQC) and as an RBC Student Ambassador, where she assisted with campus tours and events.
Beyond NorQuest, Rhecy gave back to the wider community. She volunteered at the Edmonton Food Bank, sorting and packing food, and joined the Canadian Red Cross Friendly Calls Program, providing weekly phone support to isolated seniors.
Rhecy is no stranger to recognition, having earned several prestigious awards during her time at NorQuest. She received the International Student Community Developer Award for her active involvement in campus life and support of her fellow international students, the Shillington Community Leadership Award for her outstanding contributions to the wider community, and the Marie Helena Warick Ambassador Award for her exemplary service as a student advisor.
Balancing school, part-time work in guest services, volunteer commitments, and motherhood to her 10-year-old son, Rhecy has shown great dedication, compassion, and a desire to make a difference. She plans to continue building her career in accounting, focusing on tax preparation and financial education. “I hope to stay connected with the community through mentorship and volunteering,” she shares. “These experiences bring balance to my professional life and allow me to continue supporting others.”
Well done, Rhecy! Your story is truly inspiring.
