NorQuest student leads accessibility changes on campus
April 16, 2025

Employees and visitors to NorQuest College have noticed an attractive new bench in Imagine Hall, the main entrance to the Edmonton campus. This seating was inspired by Enwar Mayil, a student at NorQuest and a Canadian Youth Accessibility Leader, recognized by the Government of Canada. His vision and dedication have led to transformative improvements in the campus experience for students with disabilities.
Enwar’s journey at NorQuest began in the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada program. From there, he progressed to the English as a Second Language (ESL Intensive) program and is now continuing his studies in Academic Upgrading, all programs offered through the Faculty of Skills and Foundational Learning. His growth through these programs reflects both his commitment and the supportive environment that NorQuest fosters.
Inspired by the challenges faced by students with disabilities, Enwar set out to make a difference at NorQuest. As a Youth Accessibility Leader, Enwar collaborated with employees at NorQuest to apply for and secure funding through the Enabling Accessibility Fund – Youth Innovation Component, a program of the Government of Canada through Employment and Social Development Canada. This program aims to provide youth opportunities to lead initiatives to make Canada more accessible for persons with disabilities.
Through advocacy and collaboration with NorQuest’s senior leaders, Enwar highlighted the challenges faced by students with disabilities.
“I feel this project was my duty,” says Enwar with modesty. “I just wanted to help everyone who has a disability.”
Enwar’s efforts led to the installation of accessible seating in Imagine Hall. This new bench features curved backrests, secure arm rests, and charging outlets, serving both comfort and functionality for students with disabilities and others who need it. These enhancements have made the space more inviting and comforting, especially for those waiting for accessible transit services.
“It has been an absolute honour and pleasure to work with Enwar,” says Beverley Titchener, Program Support and Student Inclusion Advisor. “Enwar consulted with students and staff to gather their opinions on how to best increase accessibility in Imagine Hall. He meticulously collated his findings and used them to create his proposal. Enwar demonstrated remarkable strength and confidence in his interactions with staff and upper management."
Enwar’s leadership extends beyond this project. He is spearheading efforts to raise awareness about accessibility on campus through initiatives like signage to prioritize accessible seating and digital materials to share the impact of his work. His commitment to inclusivity ensures that these improvements serve as a foundation for ongoing positive change.
“We are incredibly proud of Enwar’s dedication, courage, and determination to serve his fellow students,” says Beverley with pride. “Thank you Enwar!”
NorQuest College is proud to celebrate students like Enwar, whose determination and leadership leave a lasting impact, inspiring others to create meaningful change in their communities.
