Finding confidence, community, and a path to success

When Armin Moradi first sought adult English education, the journey began with a simple suggestion: NorQuest College’s Faculty of Skills and Foundational Learning. Balancing life as a student and parent to two children, Armin set out to improve his English skills and achieve a long-held dream—earn a Canadian education and build a fulfilling career.

The English as an Additional Language (EAL Intensive) program not only equipped Armin with language skills but also provided the courage and ability to foster meaningful relationships. Through connections built in classrooms and the broader community, Armin found a space where people of all backgrounds come together under one welcoming umbrella, sharing and celebrating their unique cultures.

The EAL Intensive program became a gateway to personal transformation. Instructors with global experience brought diverse perspectives to the classroom, creating an environment where students thrived. “I saw classmates go from writing a few lines to composing full paragraphs, and teachers celebrated our progress as we reached 80% and 90% scores,” he recalled.

For Armin, the learning extended beyond language. Lessons in multiculturalism, history, and Canadian society taught patience, resilience, and the importance of community connection. “At NorQuest, we learn more than English. We learn how to navigate life and embrace the values of the Canadian character.”

Encouraging and dedicated teachers played an instrumental role. Armin fondly recalls Ms. Laura’s Listening and Speaking class, which provided a safe space to gain confidence in conversations. Jeff’s speed-reading exercises challenged students to read stories and answer questions under a timer, fostering both skill and discipline. Ms. Suzan’s writing techniques helped students master paragraph construction, transforming hesitant writers into confident storytellers. “Within three months, I had written 50 paragraphs—a record I’m proud of!”

The impact of the faculty extended beyond the classroom. “Before college, I avoided conversations and relied on my wife for simple tasks. Now, I confidently engage with my neighbours, and friends often praise my progress,” he said. The journey wasn’t without challenges—funding limitations and caregiver responsibilities briefly interrupted his studies. Yet, with resilience and support from advisors, Armin is eager to work hard and continue his education.

Reflecting on the experience, Armin urges future students to make the most of the opportunities provided by the Faculty of Skills and Foundational Learning. “If you had seen me when I started, unable to write three grammatically correct lines, you wouldn’t believe the progress I’ve made today. NorQuest’s teaching methods and supportive staff make anything possible.”

As Armin continues on his path toward a career he loves, his story serves as a reminder of the transformative power of education and community. NorQuest College and the Faculty of Skills and Foundational Learning are proud to stand beside students like Armin Moradi, who embody the courage, determination, and perseverance needed to achieve their dreams!
