Prior to joining NorQuest College as Vice President External Affairs and Corporate Counsel, Joan worked with a variety of private, public and nonprofit sector clients as a strategic consultant and legal adviser. Joan is the former Corporate Counsel, Strategic Affairs for Capital Health. Before joining Capital Health, Joan was a lawyer at McCuaig Desrochers.
She was awarded her Queen’s Counsel designation in 2008. She attained her professional designation (ICD.D) from the Institute of Corporate Directors in 2011. She is an active instructor of corporate governance with the ICD Directors Education Program and the University of Alberta School of Business – Executive Education.
In a volunteer capacity, Joan has led large teams in complex environments to successful outcomes. She has extensive board involvement, and currently is a member of the Covenant Health Board, Edmonton International Airports Board, and the ATB Financial Board of Directors, where she is the Chair of the Governance Committee and member of the Risk Committee, as well as former Chair, Strategic Planning, and former member of both the Audit Committee and Human Resources Committee.
Joan’s diverse professional experience in organizational leadership, private law, in-house corporate counsel, and board experience make her a strong advocate and strategic thinker.
Joan graduated from University of Alberta Law School with an LL.B., and Georgetown University in Washington D.C. with a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service degree Magna Cum Laude in International Politics, Law and Organization.
