Truth and Reconciliation Day at NorQuest College is a time to honour Survivors, remember those impacted by residential schools, and deepen our understanding of the truths of our shared history. Through learning, reflection, dialogue, and action, we come together to acknowledge the ongoing impacts of colonialism, celebrate Indigenous resilience and strength, and strengthen our collective commitment to meaningful reconciliation throughout the year.

Program: 10:15 am – 10:45 am

Activities: 10:45 am – 2:45 pm

Tea and Bannock with an Elder (10:45 am – 12:00 pm; SCFL Atrium)

Connect with an Elder in a welcoming and respectful setting while sharing traditional tea and bannock. Participants are invited to listen, learn, ask questions, and build relationships through meaningful conversations that foster understanding, reflection, and connection.

Educational Resources (10:45 am – 1:00 pm; SCFL Atrium)

Explore a curated collection of resources that support learning and reflection on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, as well as Indigenous histories, cultures, and perspectives in Canada. NorQuest students, staff, faculty, and alumni are encouraged to browse, borrow, and check out books and other library materials directly from the resource table.

Truth and Reconciliation Day Peacemaking Circle (12:00 pm – 1:00 pm; SCFL 1-096)

A Space for Reflection, Learning, and Healing

Join us for a peacemaking circle to honour Truth and Reconciliation Day - a day dedicated to honouring residential school survivors and the children who were never returned home, as well as their families and communities.

This will be a respectful gathering space grounded in compassion, truth-telling, and a genuine commitment to healing relationships. Guided by principles of deep listening and shared responsibility, we'll reflect on our roles in reconciliation and what meaningful action looks like moving forward. All voices are welcome - you may share or simply listen, as feels right for you.

The sharing circle will be facilitated by Mandy Halabi, Child and Youth Care Instructor.

Blanket Exercise (12:00 pm – 3:00 pm, innovation Studio, CELT 5-204)

Blanket Exercise is a powerful and immersive experience that invites participants to step into the history of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and gain a deeper understanding of the lasting impacts of colonization. Through storytelling, movement, and guided reflection, participants will leave with new perspectives, greater awareness, and meaningful insights that can inspire reconciliation in their everyday lives. Registration is required, and participants should be prepared to stay for the full duration of the exercise (approximately three hours).

The blanket exercise will be facilitated by Sarah Dewhurst, Community Studies Instructor.

Personal Land Acknowledgment Writing (1:30 pm – 2:45 pm; SCFL 3-062)

Join Lynn Lush, NorQuest Cultural Advisor, to learn about the significance of land acknowledgments in Indigenous culture, their origins, purpose, and how to write and deliver one respectfully. You will have the opportunity to draft your own personal land acknowledgment to use going forward.

Indigenous Excellence Exhibit (All Day, SCFL Atrium Wooden Wall)

Honouring Indigenous Excellence celebrates the achievements, leadership, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples who have made a lasting impact in their communities and beyond. Explore inspiring stories of resilience, innovation, and excellence while learning about Indigenous individuals whose accomplishments continue to shape and strengthen Canada.
