1000 Women: A Million Possibilities is inspired by the artistic work of local artists. An informal tradition has developed - each fundraising initiative is graced with an iconic image.
In the first phase, leading to the creation of the Million Possibilities Endowment Fund, Irene Klar's piece "Northern Visions" was showcased.
Manola Borrajo's glasswork "Garden of Hope" will inspire the development of the 1000 Women Child Care Centre.
Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, Manola Borrajo began her career in glass art after moving to Edmonton in 2000. Her art encompasses the properties of light, the texture of glass, and the art of bold designs using palettes of vivid colour. Her painting techniques are self-taught and unique to her. Nature images such as trees, poppies and organic shapes have been the primary inspiration of Manola's glasswork.
Ms. Borrajo created "Garden of Hope" in support of the 1000 Women Child Care Centre. Her whimsical toys in a floral wonderland will inspire the current fundraising campaign and grace the walls of the Child Care Centre for years to come.
Irene Klar was born in Montreal in 1950. After completing degrees in Physical Therapy and Science at McGill University, she moved to Alberta and received a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Alberta in 1977. Irene Klar was an instructor in watercolours at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Extension in 1978-1987 and lectured in Art History at Grant MacEwan Community College in 1978.
People, their textiles, pattern decoration and colours serve as inspiration for Irene Klar. Her interest in universal design elements has taken her on far-reaching travels around the world from Alaska to Australia, from Guatemala and Peru to Morocco. These themes are incorporated into her paintings and prints, which are full of the intense colours of the marketplaces.
The iconic image above "Northern Visions" inspired the 1000 Women, supported the creation of the Million Possibilities Endowment Fund and is cherished by students passing through the halls of NorQuest College.
