Planning for visual look of new Indigenous student centre

Earlier this year, NorQuest Indigenous students were asked to share their thoughts on the look and feel of the new Indigenous student centre, scheduled to open next year in the Singhmar Centre for Learning. I sat in on the session and what a powerful experience it was!

It takes a village: A look at the 1000 Women Child Care Centre (Part 1)

The 1000 Women: A Million Possibilities campaign aims to raise $1 million to fund the construction of a new child care centre at the college. As of International Women's Day 2015 we were more than half way there.

Singhmar Centre child care centre close to $1 million funding target

As of April 2015, the 1000 Women movement had raised $544,000 for the 1000 Women Child Care Centre in the Singhmar Centre for Learning. That total now stands at over $848,000, only $152,000 shy of the targeted one million. Last week’s luncheon alone raised $172,000 for the centre.

Singhmar Centre 2015 Year in Review

What a year it’s been! A year ago today the land to the north of NorQuest College’s main downtown building was still one of Edmonton’s few remaining ground-level parking lots. Today it’s a busy building site with the second floor of the Singhmar Centre for Learning half-way completed and the contours of the building beginning to take shape.

Singhmar Centre for Learning: Architectural Style Leader!

NorQuest College’s future downtown Edmonton centerpiece continues to gain visibility, both literally and figuratively. Not only is the building now clearly visible at street level, but it is also attracting attention as an architectural “style leader” within Edmonton’s downtown revitalization.

Digging into history, part 2 - more historical photos of current downtown NorQuest lot

A few weeks ago we reported that construction crews had struck the foundation of a mysterious old building, and that further investigation had turned up two large warehouses on the site of what eventually became NorQuest College's (until recently) above-ground parking lot. Thanks to some of our local history buff friends, we've managed to find some additional photographic footage of the old Bain and Tees & Persse Warehouses.

Digging into history – The NorQuest site before NorQuest

Last week saw the unveiling of NorQuest's new construction site hoarding artwork. As with virtually every other organization and company in Edmonton's downtown with a construction project on the go, the college has sought to make the best possible use of its hoarding space to promote its brand and showcase its newest development. And with this, our brand and creative services team truly knocked it out of the park!

NorQuest College helps newcomers build construction careers through Apprenticeship Prep program

Students got two different glimpses into the future on Thursday, November 19 at the “Careers Next Door” information sessions and tours. Not only did they get a guided tour of the Singhmar Centre for Learning courtesy of the downtown campus expansion team and PCL Construction, but they also received a wealth of information on construction career opportunities.

Take a peek at our new loading dock!

NorQuest College's new loading dock is now completed! The dock and storage space will be used primarily for main building deliveries and waste removal, but will eventually play a crucial role in the larger downtown campus by also supporting the new Singhmar Center for Learning, as well as the retrofitting process for the existing building.

Building a solid foundation for the Singhmar Centre for Learning

Work has now begun on building the foundation for the Singhmar Centre for Learning and will continue throughout August. This process involves installing a total of 186 “bell” piles. These steel-reinforced concrete bolts anchored into the ground will form the secure base of the new building, as you can see in the illustration above.

How to assemble a construction crane

Today PCL Construction installed the first of two construction cranes that will help build the larger features of the Singhmar Centre for Learning over the next year. Those of you who have never seen this process in action probably don't know that assembling a crane is rather like putting together a very large piece of Ikea furniture, a remarkably simply yet breathtaking step-by-step process.

Happy New Year! Here's what's in store for early 2016

While NorQuest students and employees were enjoying some well-deserved time off over the winter break, construction crews were still hard at work on the Singhmar Centre for Learning site. And as you can see from upper levels of the main building, the new structure is starting to look more and more like an actual building.

How you can stay safe around NorQuest’s new loading dock

The new loading dock at NorQuest College’s Edmonton downtown campus opens for business on Monday, November 16. This will mean easier, more efficient deliveries and garbage collection, but also an increase in truck traffic to the east of the main building off 102 Avenue.

New downtown campus parking restrictions during construction

Following the end of business hours on Friday, February 27, the parking lots to the north of the main building (10215 108 St.) and the Health Education Centre (10704 102 Ave.) will be closed and fenced off for pre-construction work for the Singhmar Centre for Learning.

Education District driving Edmonton’s downtown revitalization

The City of Edmonton first laid out a plan for the Education District in the 2010 Capital City Development Plan, which pledges to promote opportunities to expand downtown student programming and instructional space in order to reach 50,000 students by 2020. NorQuest and the world: creating a downtown multicultural hub for learning

As of July 1, 2018, students can look forward to Canada Day celebrations at the college’s new Singhmar Centre for Learning, following its grand opening in September of 2017. The new expanded campus will enable to the college to consolidate much of its programming, including LINC and other programs aimed at newcomers, in a single downtown location.
