Online Intercultural Communication Certificate

This project is adapting the NorQuest Intercultural Communication Practitioners Certificate for online delivery. The Intercultural Communication Practitioners Certificate is for people working or planning to work in a culturally diverse setting. The Certificate prepares professionals from a variety of contexts to communicate effectively in a culturally diverse classroom, workplace and community. Participants gain a sophisticated set of skills and perspectives to support their achievement of specific goals in culturally diverse contexts. The course offers strategies for creating a positive climate for cultural diversity and increasing people's abilities to anticipate, recognize, and resolve culture-based misunderstandings.

The 3 courses in this certificate employ a mix of well established and new tools and frameworks). The basic facilitation process is notice, build, reflect and act using the reflective intercultural learning cycle, experiential learning activities, critical incidents and scenario based learning.

Participants who complete all three courses will receive a certificate of completion. Courses build on each other and must be taken in order.

Course 1: Intercultural Foundations (15 hours)

Course one introduces participants to the Reflective Intercultural Learning Cycle, a core framework for understanding and communicating more effectively in intercultural situations. The focus is to build experience using the tool along with introductory cultural knowledge to make sense of Intercultural misunderstandings and act in informed ways. Particular attention will be paid to developing a deepened cultural self awareness in this course.

Course 2: Intercultural Skills in Context (15 hours)

The second course builds the participants knowledge of culture general frameworks by practicing ways of identifying and assessing the ways culture influences the workplace, classroom and organizations. Participants will examine examples from specific contexts from a Canadian perspective as well as other cultural perspectives through the application of culture general and culture specific knowledge to make sense of and explore informed actions that can help reach goals.

Course 3: Intercultural Strategies (15 hours)

In this application focused course participants will learn an integrated perspectives approach to apply to case studies or their own project with the goal of addressing questions of inclusion and accessibility by a diverse audience.

An integrated perspectives approach calls upon multiple interconnected perspectives to facilitate the releasing of human potential toward meaningful pursuits. This approach leverages various perspectives for both defining success in a broad sustainable fashion (the what) and for effectively enabling this success (the how). It stems from the observation that many challenges are multifaceted and everything is connected.

This course can benefit professionals, managers and leaders interested in pursuing meaningful and constructive ends in the service of multiple stakeholders and with a goal of sustainability. This course uses an adapted outcome mapping process combined with an intercultural perspective to promote unity in diversity, sustainable progress, and meaningful success for multiple stakeholders.
