Metasearch engines allow you to search many different search engines at one time, presenting you with a portion of the results from each. Not all search engines index the same sites so using these will broaden your search.
Subject or search directories contain sites selected and organized by humans. Often the sites are recommended and annotated by experts. Subject directories are a good place to start if you have a broad topic or idea to research. Unlike search engines they do not retrieve page results that have low relevancy to the topic.
