  • Advanced Education in Orthopaedics for LPNsPart-time (PT), Online

    This post-diploma, advanced certificate program prepares licensed practical nurses (LPNs) with the knowledge and skills for a specialized career in orthopaedics. The program consists of two courses and a clinical practicum. Learners will further their understanding of anatomy and physiology in relation to orthopaedics and orthopaedic radiology, assessment, and trauma. The curriculum includes specialized orthopaedic procedures, including casting.

    ESL Continuing Education offers a selection of part-time English courses, ranging from general ESL (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) to specialized ESL courses.

  • Health Care Aide PLAR (Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition)Distance

    The Health Care Aide PLAR (Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition) is a certification process for individuals who have directly related work experience in the past 3 years, but do not have a certificate currently recognized in Alberta. Once you are recommended for the PLAR process, you will receive an individual learner plan for self-study to achieve the level of proficiency required for the Health Care Aide certificate.

  • Home Inspection CertificateDistance

    The program's curriculum is provided by nationally recognized home inspectors Carson Dunlop and is based on the National Occupational Standards for home inspectors in Canada. A construction background is not required. The program helps simplify the technical concepts and avoids theoretical discussions, formulas and calculations. The focus is on things home inspectors need to know and ensuring program graduates are workforce ready.

  • Intercultural Communication PractitionerOnline

    In 2008, recognizing the significant growth in the number of new Canadians participating in Alberta’s workforce, NorQuest College created the Centre for Intercultural Education. Part of the Centre’s mandate includes partnering with organizations both in the public and private sectors to conduct applied research that investigates and develops training resources, methodologies and curricula that build English for the Workplace (EWP) and intercultural communication competence.

    The research is designed to develop more resilient and better integrated newcomers in our workplaces and communities. It also targets the intercultural skill development of Canadian-born colleagues who work with this increasingly diverse workforce.

    The Centre’s current inventory Intercultural Communication curriculum is appropriate for the training and development requirements of almost any organization. Situational exercises specific to the conditions that exist in a particular workgroup are often incorporated into training in order to increase effectiveness and impact.

    Participants may take one or all of the courses in this program. Participants who successfully complete all three courses will receive a certificate of completion.

    Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) continuing education courses can be applied to your continuing competency profile. These are self-paced online education courses. You can register at any time and you will have 6 months to complete each course. A certificate of completion is awarded for each course successfully completed.

    We will custom-design a workshop for groups of eight or more LPNs to meet your needs. Courses can be prEsented at NorQuest College, utilizing our labs and classrooms, or on-site in your community. These workshops will focus on the skills and topics important to LPNs at your facility.

  • Project AssistantPart-time (PT), Online

    The Project Assistant program will equip students with the skills and knowledge required to effectively support project managers in their day-to-day operations. Students will learn effective communication, a variety of business software applications to increase their productivity, basic office procedures and functions, and describe fundamental principles, terminology and processes of effective project management.

  • Service Industry SkillsPart-time (PT)

    The Service Industry Skills Training certificate program will provide students with the skills, knowledge and certifications required to become employable in the service industry. These short certifications are designed to get students trained in world-class customer service skills and get working quickly.

    All students take a common Introduction to the Service Industry (XBUS2002) course, then may choose to take one or more of 5 different specialities, each of which will prepare individuals to enter the service industry with the foundational knowledge in a number of competencies and skills that are applicable across the sector. Each speciality certificate will help advance skills, improve productivity, build talent, elevate expertise, enable growth, and increase efficiency.

    Total course time ranges from 18-30 hours, depending on specialization. Students may add optional certifications to further increase their knowledge and employability.

  • Supervisor and ManagementPart-time (PT)

    Designed for current or emerging leaders and those looking for promotability within their current or future roles, the Supervisor and Management certificate program will provide you or your team with the skills and insight required to optimize their performance when supporting their teams and corporate goals.

    Choose four from the six courses available to complete the certificate. All six courses in the program will support your strategic priorities through the development and delivery of outcomes-based training. Learning activities included in the training optimize engagement and ensure that each key concept and core value is presented in a number of styles and formats. Case study discussions are included.

    This program is eligible for the Canada-Alberta Job Grant.

    In this course, you will learn about using nursing research to improve the quality of your nursing practice. Foundational research knowledge presented includes essential elements of the research process, ethical considerations associated with involvement in research, and selected features of qualitative and quantitative research.
  • Assisting with Medication Delivery for Health Care AidesOnline
    Health care aides play a key role in providing clients with quality care. The role of the HCA has expanded to include assisting with medication delivery. Additional skills and knowledge are needed to ensure medication safety. This course prepares HCAs to safely and effectively assist with medications under the supervision of a health-care professional. It provides participants with the confidence to respond and succeed in their expanding role.
  • Awareness Course on the Quality Management System as per ISO 9001:2008Part-time (PT)
    The Awareness Course on the Quality Management System (QMS) as per ISO 9001: 2008 is designed to help participants learn the requirements of the international standard on the quality management system. The standard focuses on achieving continual improvement in the performance of an organization’s product or services through a "Plan-Do-Check-Act" (PDCA) approach. The objective of the course is to provide participants with an overview of the purpose and requirements of ISO 9001:2008 as a tool for business improvement and customer satisfaction. Participants attending this course will learn from various case studies designed to address the issues related to quality monitoring, continual improvement in quality performance, and customer satisfaction.
  • Environment and Health and Safety for ContractorsPart-time (PT)
    Increasingly, organizations are being judged by the environment and health and safety performance of their vendors and contractors, as well as by their own EHS performance. For regulatory and overall social responsibility reasons, organizations are developing and implementing stringent health and safety requirements for their contractors and vendors. The challenge is often how to implement these requirements if organizations have multiple contractors and vendors working for them at different sites. This training program is designed to assist participants in dealing with the environment and health and safety performance of contractors and vendors. This course will assist participants in mapping the contractors and vendors and identifying the EHS risks in the supply chain. Participants will learn to assess contractors’ and vendors’ performance based on the organization’s OHS requirements, establishing EHS objectives for contractors and vendors  and monitoring and addressing the concerns through suitable corrective and preventive actions.
  • Environmental Auditing for Environmental ManagersPart-time (PT)
    This course is designed to provide a basic understanding of environmental management and auditing skills to supervisors, environmental managers, and environmental auditors. The course will include sessions on key environmental management issues, process mapping, identifying environmental risks, and environmental auditing. The auditing modules will be based on international standards/guidelines for environmental and quality management system auditing. The course will focus on planning and conducting the audits and preparing audit reports. The course will include group exercises on environmental auditing, and participants will learn how to conduct an effective audit and write a non-conformance report. Participants will also learn how to investigate and analyze the root cause for a non-conformance and write a corrective/preventive action for identified non-conformances.

    The ISO 14000 series of standards addresses various aspects of environmental management. These standards provide practical tools for organizations looking to identify and control their environmental impact and continually improve their environmental performance. ISO 14001:2004 sets out the criteria for an environmental management system and can be certified to. The standard provides a framework that an organization can follow to set up an effective environmental management system. The course is designed for environment personnel and provides an excellent opportunity for middle- and senior-level professionals seeking to implement ISO 14001 in their organizations. The course will give participants the background to understand the requirements and even more importantly, it will focus on strategies and provide tools to implement the key requirements. Practical examples and interactive exercises will be used throughout the course.

    These complicated mechanical systems are broken down into simple components. The course starts with basic principles of operation and builds an understanding of the more complicated details of system operation. Considerable detail is provided on how these systems fail. Upon completion, the learner is able to test and inspect air conditioning and heat pump systems as a professional home inspector.

    This non-technical course focuses on home inspection as both a process and a  business. There are discussions about how home inspections are arranged and how to conduct an inspection. We address such issues as communicating your findings to clients verbally and in writing. There is excellent instruction on writing professional technical reports, and sample checklists are included.
  • Home Inspection - ElectricalPart-time (PT), Distance, Online
    This course is designed for people who do not have a professional background as electricians. It begins with a description of electricity in a house and develops an understanding of the basics of the electrical system. The course moves on to address how  electricity is brought into the house and distributed safely to its end-use points, including switches, lights, and receptacles. The learning objective is to provide the learner with the skills necessary to assess the electrical component of a home in a professional home inspection.

    This course begins with an illustrated description of architectural styles. Descriptions of wall systems, windows, and doors are included, along with a discussion about how to inspect and identify problems in these areas. Exterior structures and landscaping features are also addressed.

    This course provides an introduction to residential heating systems, starting with a description of fuels and then focusing on furnaces and boilers. Modern combination systems are also discussed. Detailed instructions on operational tests, common failure modes, and life expectancies of various systems are included.

    The heating discussion is continued with coverage of chimneys, wood heating, fireplaces, steam heating, electric heating systems, and space heaters. The information is presented using clear diagrams that illustrate the make-up and functioning of these heating methods. Again, this course concentrates on inspection strategies, test procedures, and problem identification.
  • Home Inspection - Insulation & InteriorPart-time (PT), Distance, Online
    This course focuses on two different parts of the home. The first section addresses home insulation and ventilation systems. Modern building standards are explained along with the principles of heat transfer. The section on interiors addresses floor, wall, and ceiling finishes as well as stairs, windows, doors, and wet basements. How things are built, what goes wrong and why it matters are all addressed.

    The plumbing course is broken into four segments: supply piping, water heaters, waste piping, and plumbing fixtures. Basic but essential information on the physics of water is presented in clear, accessible terms at the beginning of the course. Instruction on how systems work and common failure modes is provided.     This course describes both sloped and flat roof construction. Detailed descriptions of materials and rich illustrations help to explain flashing details and the intersections that are often problems on roofs. Roof problems, causes, and implications are identified for all of the common roofing materials. Included are sections on how to inspect roofs and what to watch for with various roofing materials.

    All the structural elements of a building from the footings and foundations to the floor, wall, and roof assemblies are addressed in detail. Elements of good construction are explained and illustrated, along with common failure modes and how to identify them.
  • Incineration TechnologyPart-time (PT)
    Incineration is a waste treatment process that involves the combustion of organic substances contained in waste materials. Incineration and other high temperature waste treatment systems are described as "thermal treatment" of waste. Training will cover the basic principles of incineration technologies, the waste incineration process, and the key environmental and occupational health and safety practices associated with it. The course will cover key environmental regulations and guidelines related to small/batch incinerators.

  • Integrated Management Systems (ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007)Part-time (PT)
    In view of the linkages among the various environment and occupational health and safety issues, organizations worldwide are addressing environment and health and safety (EHS) issues in an integrated way rather than dealing with them in isolation. ISO 14001 establishes the requirements for identifying environmental risks and establishing an environmental management system (EMS) to address the environmental issues in an organization. OHSAS 18001 focuses on the occupational health and safety (OHS) issues in a similar fashion. Both standards are designed on the principle of continual improvement through a "Plan-Do-Check-Act" (PDCA) approach and offer great opportunity for an integrated approach to integrating EHS issues. Organizations having an integrated EHS management system (EHSMS) based on ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 will be able optimize their resources and effectively identify the key environmental and OHS risks and address them in a systematic way to achieve continual improvement in their EHS performance. An integrated EHS management system can reduce disruptions to operations and promote greater cohesiveness in environmental and OHS issues. This course will help participants understand the requirements of ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. They will learn how to integrate these requirements to have a common management system to address environment and OHS issues and achieve a continual improvement in the EHS performance.
  • Internal Auditor’s Training as per ISO 14001Part-time (PT)
    The ISO 14000 series of standards addresses various aspects of environmental management. These standards provide practical tools for organizations looking to identify and control their environmental impact and continually improve their environmental performance. ISO 14001:2004 sets out the criteria for an environmental management system and can be certified to. The standard provides a framework that an organization can follow to set up an effective environmental management system. This is a competency-based two-day course designed to provide participants with a basic knowledge and understanding of environment management systems especially with respect to ISO 14001: 2004. The course provides an introduction to environmental management systems (EMS) and the business benefits of an effective EMS. The course structure incorporates presentations, EMS quizzes, group exercises, and interactive discussions. The instructor will explain the auditor's tools and also techniques for conducting effective internal EMS audits. The course teaches how to plan, conduct, and report on first- and second-party EMS audits.

    Learners will be introduced to the fundamentals of process mapping. The course will provide an overview of business process key concepts from Level 0 to 4.  Learners will be shown how to prepare a simple process map utilizing a “swimlane” technique. This course is ideal for anyone who wish to gain a better understanding of business processes as well as to prepare for process review and improvement activities (e.g. administrative staff, project managers, and for staff in leadership positions). Course length is one day.
  • ISO 26000: Guidance on Social ResponsibilityPart-time (PT)
    ISO 26000 was launched in 2010 as an international standard providing guidelines to organizations for social responsibility. As a guidance document, ISO 26000 encourages organizations to discuss their social responsibility issues and possible actions with relevant stakeholders. ISO 26000 encourages organizations to consider what the organization's social responsibility is and how to engage in behaviour that is socially responsible. The course offers guidance on identifying and selecting ways in which an organization can make positive contributions to society. ISO 26000 also encourages reporting on actions taken. This training session will help participants understand ISO 26000 as it relates to an organization and its stakeholders. Participants will be able to identify social responsibility gaps in the current management systems and those of the supply chain. The hands-on approach will help them explore tools and frameworks for applying ISO 26000 requirements.
  • ISO 50001: Energy Management SystemPart-time (PT)
    Released in 2011, ISO 50001 standard specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and improving an energy management system whose purpose is to enable an organization to follow a systematic approach in achieving continual improvement in energy performance, including energy efficiency, energy security,  and energy use and consumption. The standard aims to help organizations continually reduce their energy use and, therefore, their energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. A significant feature in ISO 50001 is the requirement to "improve the EnMS and the resulting energy performance." ISO 50001 supports organizations in all sectors as they seek to achieve the goal of using energy more efficiently, through the development of an energy management system. ISO 50001 is based on the management system model of continual improvement also used for other well-known standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. This similarity makes it easier for organizations to integrate energy management into their overall efforts to improve quality and environmental management. This course provides a basic understanding of ISO 50001 EnMS and shows its interaction with ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.

  • Occupational Health and Safety Management System - OHSAS 18001: 2007 Awareness CoursePart-time (PT)
    OHSAS 18001:2007 is an internationally recognized occupational health and safety (OHS) management system designed to assist organizations in managing OHS issues to achieve continual improvement in their occupational health and safety performance. The standard is developed based on "Plan-Do-Check-Act" (PDCA) requirements and provides an excellent framework for organizations striving to proactively identify their OHS risks, address them on a proactive basis, and improve their OHS performance. This training course includes group exercises, case study presentations, and sample OHS risk assessments for various case studies. The course will assist the participants in identifying and prioritizing OHS risks, developing objectives and targets to improve OHS performance, and implementing the OHS management system for continual improvement.

    For daycare employees and high school students only, this course allows students to be eligible for the Child Development Assistant Certificate (formerly known as Child Care Level 1). This course covers child development and the role of the caregiver in a child care setting in Alberta.  Students must be permanent residents of Alberta and sixteen or more years of age.

There will be discussions and case studies aimed at identifying and addressing the labour and social issues in the supply chain.

    Stakeholder engagement is the process by which an organization involves people who may be affected by the decisions the organization makes or people who can influence the implementation of the organization’s decisions. Stakeholder engagement has always been crucial to an organization’s performance. Today’s organizational challenges and the need to achieve sustainable development make it more important to engage with previously ignored stakeholders, including the voiceless, and with more familiar stakeholders on new topics and in new ways. This is true for organizations entering new markets or facing changing societal expectations. Furthermore, the imperatives of sustainable development reinforce the need to engage with stakeholders in order to realize specific organizational goals, as well as to meet broader social, environmental, and economic challenges. The overall purpose of stakeholder engagement is to drive strategic direction and operational excellence for organizations, and to contribute to the kind of sustainable development from which organizations, their stakeholders, and wider society can benefit.

    Sustainability reporting is a method of internalizing and improving an organization’s commitment to sustainable development in a way that can be demonstrated to both internal and external stakeholders. A sustainability report enables organizations to report their sustainability performance in a structured way. A well-established sustainability-reporting program in an organization ensures a robust system for sustainability management and reporting with regards to transparency, traceability, and compliance. Regulators have a direct interest in sustainability reporting as it can help markets function more efficiently and drive progress towards sustainable development goals. An increasing amount of policy and regulation are promoting sustainability reporting globally. Thus, sustainability reporting is part of an organization’s risk-management process and overall communications strategy.     The test is a requirement for anyone (including native speakers of English) who wants to drive a vehicle for hire in the Edmonton area. The test consists of a short listening selection and an interview. It tests the listening and speaking ability of candidates to ensure that they are able to interact with clients at an adequate level of proficiency.
  • Urinary Catheterization and Bladder IrrigationOnline
    This course is designed to provide the LPN with the knowledge and skills required to safely insert, maintain and remove a urinary catheter as well as to safely care for a client requiring intermittent or continuous bladder irrigations. This course will also introduce the LPN to basic knowledge on caring for suprapubic catheters and the care of the catheter site of a client with peritoneal dialysis.
