Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

Language Arts – this requirement can be met with any of the following, or an equivalent course:

  • 60% in English Language Arts 10-2 (for CLB 7 students), or
  • 60% in English Language Arts 20-2 (for CLB 6 students), or
  • 55% in English Language Arts 30-2 (for CLB 6 students)

English Language Proficiency Requirements

Applicants must provide proof of their English language proficiency (ELP) level before admission.

This program is for both:

  • students at a CLB 6 who need one term of English language training (ESL) to meet the ELP requirements for the Health Care Aide program, and
  • students at a CLB 7 who require English Language Arts 20-2 to meet the academic requirements for the Health Care Aide program.

Students who have completed LINC or ESL courses at NorQuest College with a minimum CLB 6 in each language skill will meet the minimum ELP requirement. Acceptable evidence of ELP may also include an ELP test result in any one of the following ranges:

  • CLBA: No section score below 6, and at least one section score below 8
  • IELTS Academic: 5.5 overall, with at least one section score below 6.5
  • TOEFL iBT: 54 - 83
  • Duolingo: 95 - 109

ELP test results must have been obtained within two years of the start date of your program.

All students must demonstrate that they meet the ELP requirements for the Health Care Aide program before beginning classes in term 2 of the program.

Practicum/Work Experience Requirements

The following are not needed for admission purposes, but will be needed before you attend the practicum. There may be costs associated with completing these requirements.

  • Successful completion of all prerequisite courses.
  • The following courses are needed:
    • It's Your Move: XHLT 1070 (current within one year)
    • WHMIS: XBUS 1017 (current within three years)
    • BLS (CPR): XHLT 1200. For the duration of your practicum, you must hold BLS for Health Care Provider’s certification that has been completed within the last 12 months
    • HBPE: XHLT 1023 (current within three years)
  • Clear Police Information Check. Vulnerable Sector Check is also needed if over 18 years of age.
  • Up-to-date immunization record - must be completed and a record submitted two weeks before the first clinical practice.
  • Completion of the AHS Information & Privacy online learning module.
  • Completion of the HSPNet consent form.
  • N95 mask fit testing as arranged by the program (current within two years).

Progression

To progress into term two of the program, students will need to meet both:

  • an ELP level that meets the requirements for the Health Care Aide program by taking a Duolingo English test, and
  • the academic requirements of the Health Care Aide program.

Students must receive a pass grade in each course to progress through the program.

Graduation Requirements

Students must pass all Health Care Aide courses to qualify for graduation.

A Provincial Comprehensive Exam must be completed within 60 days of the successful completion of HLTH 2551 to be eligible for graduation.
