It is strongly recommended that students take the following courses prior to entering the program:

These courses can be taken through Open Studies at NorQuest College. There is a heavy course load in the first term of the Practical Nurse program; completing these courses allows for better success once you are enrolled. If you intend to apply for full-time student loan funding, contact a student navigator regarding course load prior to enrolling in Open Studies courses, as this may affect your funding opportunities.

Note: For all deliveries, the Practical Nurse program has a five-year shelf-life regulation on all nursing courses, whether the courses were taken at NorQuest College or transferred from another institution. Visit Transfer Credit for more information.

Academic admission requirements are different from English language proficiency (ELP) requirements. NorQuest College English for Academic Purposes courses may be used to meet both requirements. See below for details.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

If English is your second language, you must provide proof of ELP prior to admission. ELP test results must have been obtained within two years of the start date of your program.

Acceptable evidence of ELP may be one of the following test scores:

  • IELTS Academic: no score below 7.5 in listening, 7 in speaking, 6.5 in reading, 7 in writing
  • TOEFL iBT: 94
  • CELBAN: no score below 10 in listening, 8 in speaking, 8 in reading, 7 in writing
  • minimum of 50% in ESLG 1860 and ESLG 1861

See English Language Proficiency Recognized Countries for information about meeting this requirement based on previous studies in English.

See Admissions Process for the steps to becoming a student.

Practicum/Work Experience Requirements

Students are required to travel to various locations to complete their clinical practice experiences. Within the time frame of the program, every effort is made to accommodate students in clinical practice placements. Access to a vehicle may be required.

The following are not required for admission purposes, but will be required before you attend the first clinical practice. There may be additional costs associated with completing these requirements.
