Academic Assessment

We provide academic assessment for employers, NorQuest applicants and students and to the general public. We use standardized tests and employer-developed exams to assess the math, reading and writing skills of prospective employees to determine whether they have adequate skills for the position. If you plan to further your education, we can assess your reading, writing and math skills to determine if you meet the expected standards.

If you apply for a NorQuest program or are a current student, an academic skills assessment may be required for two reasons:

  • To determine whether you have the academic skills you need for the program
  • To determine which academic upgrading courses you should take

Skills Assessment Tests for Career Programs

If you have not passed courses that are required for entrance into a career program or do not have proof of completing courses, you may be able to request an academic skills assessment.

Process:

  1. Apply for the program, present your transcript or other academic documents, and pay the application fee.
  2. Book a testing appointment by calling 780-644-6130. If you are unable to come to Edmonton for testing, ask about testing in your home community.
  3. Complete one or more tests (for example, reading, math, writing, thinking skills).

When you have completed the tests, you will meet with an Assessment Advisor who will explain the test results and make recommendations. If your scores are satisfactory, the assessment may be accepted in place of the course requirements. If your scores do not meet the standard required, the Assessment Advisor will discuss educational options with you.

Academic Upgrading Placement Tests

When you apply for Adult Upgrading or English Language Training programs, an assessment may be done to ensure that you are enrolled in courses that match your academic skills. If you require your placement exam in an alternative format because of a disability, we will make special arrangements for you.

Process:

  1. Apply for the program. You will be asked to speak with a Program Admissions Advisor to ensure that this is the most appropriate program for you. Pay the non-refundable application fee.
  2. Book a testing appointment. If testing is not required, an Assessment Advisor will talk with you and plan your educational program. You do not need to study for the tests since the purpose is to determine your current level of skills. If you are unable to come to Edmonton for testing, ask about testing in your home community.
  3. After testing (a standardized reading and math test and an essay), an Assessment Advisor will discuss your results with you and recommend appropriate courses.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

The College recognizes prior learning by assigning credit for skills and knowledge acquired through work, non-formal education or training, self-study, and volunteer activities, as long as they match the skills and knowledge taught in our courses and meet the minimum standards. For example, if you have worked as an aide in a hospital for a number of years you may qualify for credits towards our Health Care Aide Certificate.

If you are eligible for prior learning assessment you will work with subject specialists from the program in which you want to register.

Call 780-644-6096 for additional information about recognition for informal learning.

Advance Course Credit

Course work completed at another post-secondary institution may be equivalent to course work at NorQuest College. To be considered for advance credit, a formal request for assessment is required. Request forms may be obtained from the Registrar's Office and must be submitted one month prior to the start date of the program. Fees may apply.

Note: Requests for advanced credit must be submitted one month prior to the program start date. Previous course work is subject to limitations based on the time frame in which the work was completed.
