NorQuest College provides learners with a complete education that balances strong academic foundations with Aboriginal culture. Our inclusive approach supports the diversity of our learner population, preparing graduates for work in a wide range of environments, including Aboriginal communities.
Aboriginal learners make up 21% of NorQuest’s student population. As a result, we have designed an extensive network of services tailored specifically to the needs of this group, including Aboriginal Student Support Services and Elder support.
Centre for Excellence in Aboriginal Learning
NorQuest recently established the Centre for Excellence in Aboriginal Learning to strengthen the diverse Aboriginal perspectives and identities within the programs and services. The Centre for Excellence in Aboriginal Learning recognizes the importance of engaging Aboriginal communities and partners to address the diverse and unique needs of Aboriginal students and communities.

Aboriginal Student Support Coordinator
The Aboriginal student support coordinator is available for one-on-one appointments with students who need help with any of the following:
- Completing the application process and identifying Aboriginal funding options, including Aboriginal awards, scholarships, and bursaries
- Providing career planning and educational guidance
- Connecting with instructors, counsellors, student advisors, admissions personnel, funding agencies, and community services
The Aboriginal student support coordinator is also responsible for organizing various cultural events throughout the year, including the annual Round Dance and Aboriginal Awareness Day.

Aboriginal Educational Counsellor
The Aboriginal educational counsellor assists Aboriginal students to cope more effectively with personal, financial, vocational, and academic issues. The counsellor works closely with the Elders, Aboriginal programs, and Aboriginal Support Services at NorQuest College to address the unique challenges that may hinder the success of Aboriginal students.

Aboriginal Elder
Aboriginal Elder support is available on campus to provide spiritual and cultural guidance. Aboriginal students are encouraged to meet with an Elder for counselling, spiritual guidance, and healing circles.

Aboriginal Ceremonial Room
NorQuest’s Aboriginal Ceremonial Room provides a multi-purpose facility for Aboriginal students. Located in Room 618 of the main building at the downtown campus, the Ceremonial Room is used for formal ceremonies, counselling sessions with the Elder, and as an area for students to socialize.

Aboriginal Programs
NorQuest is proud to partner with the Ben Calf Robe Society, the Oteenow Employment and Training Society, and Metis Employment Services. Students at NorQuest have many opportunities to learn about Aboriginal culture and participate in Aboriginal events and ceremonies. At the same time, they have options to transfer to other NorQuest programs or to workplace training in order to prepare to enter the workforce.
NorQuest’s Aboriginal-focused courses and programs are open to any student seeking to explore a career that will engage Aboriginal people.

Aboriginal University/College Transition Program
NorQuest College offers a university/college transition program for Aboriginal students. The program provides individualized program plans focused on providing prerequisites for post-secondary programs, as well as specialized courses, tutorials, and seminars designed to prepare students for the post-secondary environment. Upon successful completion of this program, students will enter their program of choice at their goal post-secondary institution. See page 48 for detailed information on this program.

Ben Calf Robe
The Ben Calf Robe adult upgrading program emphasizes Aboriginal culture with Aboriginal literature, Native studies, Cree language and culture courses, and personal development. See Ben Calf Robe adult upgrading program for detailed information on this program.

Prep for Aboriginal Policing and Security
This 16-week adult upgrading program helps students achieve the prerequisites they need for entry into the Aboriginal Policing and Security program. See page 61 for detailed information on this program.

Prep for Aboriginal Community Support Worker
This 16-week adult upgrading program gives students the prerequisites for entry into the Aboriginal Community Support Worker program. See Aboriginal Community Support Worker program for detailed information on this program.

Aboriginal Community Support Worker Certificate
This entry-level human service career program is a gateway to employment in a human service agency or to further learning. This program is an introduction to the skills necessary for helping individuals, families, or communities. Students may use transferable courses for higher-level programs. See page 86 for detailed information on this program.

Aboriginal Policing and Security Certificate
The Aboriginal Policing and Security program helps students meet entrance requirements for Alberta policing agencies and for federal agencies including the RCMP and the Correctional Service of Canada. Students may receive funding support from First Nations and Metis associations and Students Finance. See page 88 for detailed information on this program.

Practical Nurse Diploma with an Aboriginal Focus
This program focuses on traditional Aboriginal practices and special health concerns. The program of study includes an Aboriginal identity course and all Practical Nurse courses. See page 120 for detailed information on this program.

Partnerships and Community Delivery
Our health career programs are delivered in partnership with several other providers and are designed to meet the needs of individual groups within their own communities.
The Practical Nurse diploma program has been delivered for Aboriginal students in the First Nations Kehewin community (via Lakeland College), at GWES (Gitskan-Wet’suwet’en Educational Society) in British Columbia, at the Yellowhead Tribal College, and the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technology.
