Advanced Education in Orthopaedics for LPNs

Program Overview

Expand your scope of practice by learning special orthopaedic procedures. This continuing education program prepares you to work in a cast room, emergency department, orthopaedic physician’s office, or orthopaedic patient care unit. You will learn to do the following:

  • Assess children and adults for trauma, orthopaedic pathology, and complications
  • Assess clients with ambulation aids
  • Care for clients with casts, splints, braces, traction, and external fixation
  • Care for clients with amputations

  • Five-day full-time workshop
  • Preceptored clinical practice (This can be completed in your own community.)

Admission Requirements

  • Active registration with a college for LPNs
  • ADVO-1101 (Foundations of Anatomy and Physiology for Orthopaedics)
  • Experience working in an acute care setting is an asset

Clinical Requirements

  • WHMIS Certification
  • BLS – Level C
  • Current immunizations including hepatitis B
  • Negative TB test
  • Clear criminal record check (Health-care agencies require students doing clinical practice to submit a criminal record check.)

Progression

Students must attain a pass grade in each course to progress through the program. To qualify for graduation, students must pass all courses.

Credential

After successfully completing this program, graduates will be awarded a NorQuest Advanced Education in Orthopaedics for LPNs certificate.

Honours Criteria

  • Program GPA (grade point average) is greater than or equal to 3.7.
  • Student has not written a supplemental exam.
  • Student has not failed or repeated any courses.
  • Student has not had a learning contract.
