Aboriginal Policing and Security

Program Overview

The Aboriginal Policing and Security certificate program is a 10-month post-secondary program that can lead to further learning or employment in the following jobs:

  • Police officer
  • Correctional service officer
  • Sheriff or bailiff
  • Military policing
  • Security officer
  • Security manager
  • First Nations policing

Career Potential

Graduates have excellent career potential in a variety of security and law enforcement fields. This program is designed to help students meet the entrance requirements for Alberta policing agencies and for federal agencies such as the RCMP and Correctional Service of Canada.

Transferability

Some courses transfer to NorQuest’s Aboriginal Community Support Worker program. Consult with the program coordinator for transfer options.

Admission Requirements

  • Program interview
  • Grade 10 standing on an admissions exam
  • Health Status form
  • Criminal record check; must include vulnerable sector check . (CRC must meet the criteria of the practicum sponsors.)
  • Have the ability to complete a high school diploma or GED by the end of the program
  • Have the physical and mental abilities to participate in HEED 1001 (Students will be required to complete a medical clearance prior to HEED 1001.)
  • Have the ability to obtain a valid Alberta driver’s licence by the end of the program

Prep for Aboriginal Policing and Security Admission Route

Students may choose an alternative admission route to this program by successfully completing the Prep for Aboriginal Policing and Security program. This route also requires a criminal record check. Please see page 61 for the requirements of this program.

Progression

To qualify for graduation, students must pass all courses.

Credential

After successfully completing this program, graduates will be awarded a NorQuest Aboriginal Policing and Security certificate.

Honours Criteria

  • Overall grade point average (GPA) is greater than or equal to 4.0 (95% or higher).
  • The student has not written a supplemental exam.
  • The student has not failed or repeated any courses.
  • The student has not had a learning contract.

Funding Your Education

Students in this program may be eligible for Alberta government funding including costs for tuition, books, and living expenses.
