Program Overview
This entry-level human service career program is your gateway to employment in a human service agency or to further learning. This program is an introduction to the skills necessary for helping individuals, families, or communities. Students may use transferable courses for higher-level programs. Learners will develop knowledge and skills in problem solving, health and wellness, life management, computers, Aboriginal culture, interpersonal communications, crisis intervention, domestic violence prevention, and addictions. Learners will be introduced to the Canadian judicial system and models of alternative dispute resolution.
Career Potential
Many positions are available for individuals with human services skills, an understanding of the judicial system, and sensitivity to Aboriginal culture and traditions. These include:
- School liaison worker
- Group home worker
- Family support worker
- Child and youth care worker
- Addictions support worker
- Court liaison worker
Transferability
Some courses transfer to NorQuest's Aboriginal
Policing and Security Program and Social Work diploma program).
Consult with the program coordinator for transfer options.
Admission Requirements
- Program interview
- English 10-1 or equivalent
- Criminal record check; must include vulnerable sector check
- Intervention Record Check (formerly Child Welfare or CWIS Check)
Note: Both the criminal record check and the Intervention Record Check must meet the criteria of the practicum sponsors.
Prep for Aboriginal Community Support Worker Admission Route
Students can choose an alternative admission route to this program by successfully completing the Prep for Aboriginal Community Support Worker program. This route also requires a criminal record check and an Intervention Record Check. Please see page 60 for program requirements.
Progression
To qualify for graduation, students must pass all courses.
Credential
After successfully completing this program, graduates will be awarded an Aboriginal Community Support Worker certificate.
Honours Criteria
- Overall grade point average (GPA) is greater than or equal to 4.0 (95% or higher).
- The student has not written a supplemental exam.
- The student has not failed or repeated any courses.
- The student has not had a learning contract.
