Kidneys and Bladder

Normal Function

The kidneys maintain chemical and water balance in the body. The bladder acts as a storage device to collect wastes until they are discarded.

What occurs with normal aging?

When do I call?
Decreased efficiency of kidney function. Higher amounts of wastes in the blood. Monitor blood pressure and urine output

Report all medications including over the counter drugs, alcohol, herbal and vitamin supplements.

Report a drop in urine volume, puffy tissues or unreasonable drowsiness.

A loss of muscle tone and loss of perception of bladder fullness.

A more frequent and urgent need to urinate with a full bladder.

Night-time urination.
Shame and guilt about loss of ability to control urination.

Maintain water intake during the day. Restrict fluid intake in the evening.
Urinate regularly.


Changing patterns of urination or urgency that is accompanied by burning, loss of control over urination, inability to empty the bladder, a lack of urine, or a change in body temperature and energy level should be reported.
