Normal Function

Our immune system functions to protect our body from external and internal damage by recognizing and destroying invaders as well as repairing damaged structures.

What occurs with normal aging?

When do I call?
Decreased numbers of immune system cells and decreased responsiveness of cells. Increased time to respond and slower repair.

Monitor for skin lesions.

Monitor for the rate of healing. Encourage immunizations.

Report any signs of infection: redness, swelling, oozing, pain, moist.

Report unreasonable drowsiness.

Decreased immune system cell ability to recognize foreign tissue.
Increased incidence of autoimmune illnesses and cancers.

Encourage routine examinations and adequate diets.

Seek assistance with any signs of cancer.
