Programs with a work, practicum, or clinical placement need up-to-date immunization records.
The process of getting your immunization records and updating your vaccines can take several weeks. Some programs require that you submit your forms at least 60 days before practicum. We recommend you start the process as soon as possible.
1 Review required immunizations
These immunizations are required before attending practicum/clinical placement.
You must have:
Hepatitis B
- First dose completed
MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
- First dose completed
Tuberculosis (TB) testing
- TB skin test completed within 1 year of your program start date
- If your TB test is positive:
- You must complete a chest X-ray within 6 months of your program start date
DTaP / Td vaccines
- First dose of DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis)
- One pertussis booster after age 18
- Td booster every 10 years
Varicella (Chickenpox)
- First dose completed
OR:
- If you were born in Canada before January 2001, a history of chickenpox is acceptable
OR
- A positive blood test confirming immunity. This must be completed if you:
- Are unsure whether you’ve had chickenpox or are immune
- Are an international student
Note: If your test result is negative, you must receive the first dose of varicella vaccine.
2Check optional but recommended immunizations
These are not required for graduation but may be required by employers or placement sites.
Recommended:
- Two doses of COVID-19 vaccine
- Second dose of MMR
- Completion of Td series
- Second dose of varicella vaccine

4 Gather your immunization records
If you already received vaccines
You must get copies of your immunization records as proof.
Alberta students
If you’ve had any vaccinations in Alberta, contact 811, a public health center, or your doctor’s office to request your records.
Students from outside Alberta
Contact a doctor, clinic, or public health authority in each country or province where you’ve received vaccinations and request your vaccination records in English.
If you cannot get your records
You may need to repeat the required immunizations.
5 Book an appointment with a health professional
Even if your vaccines are up to date, you must book with a health professional to:
- Review your records
- Complete your Practicum Immunization Form
- Sign the form
You may not be able to participate in your practicum without completing this step.
Choosing a health provider
Public health centres and pharmacies may help you check your records and fill out your form, however not all of them provide this service, so it’s a good idea to check before booking an appointment.
