If you are experiencing a financial emergency, you may be able to apply for emergency funding to cover essential expenses needed to continue your studies. Approval is based on eligibility and available funding. Eligible students may receive one emergency bursary per academic year.
A financial emergency is an unexpectedAn unexpected circumstance is one that could not reasonably have been planned for, prevented, or budgeted for.
Emergency funding is not normally available for expected circumstances, including:
- Tuition or fees
- Regular rent, groceries, or other living expenses
- Running out of funds during the term
- Ongoing financial challenges
- Accumulated debt or overdue bills
An urgent circumstance requires immediate action and can’t reasonably be delayed without affecting your health, safety, housing, or ability to continue your studies.
Examples of situations that may qualify
- Medical or dental emergencies requiring immediate treatment
- Immediate safety concerns
- Risk of losing housing or unsafe living conditions
- Loss of essential transportation needed to attend classes or placement
- Sudden loss of income creating an immediate financial crisis
- Emergency travel due to an urgent immediate family situation
- Loss of essential academic tools when no reasonable alternative is available
- Unexpected caregiving responsibilities that directly affect attendance
Who can apply for emergency funding?
You may be eligible if you’re currently enrolled in a NorQuest credit program and:
- You need immediate financial support to address your situation
- Your situation couldn’t have been planned for, prevented, or budgeted for
- Your ability to continue your studies is at immediate risk
- You can’t cover the cost by reducing non-essential expenses
- Other sources of financial assistance, such as government student aid or family support, are not available or are not enough to address your immediate need
- You are up to date on your NorQuest tuition and fee payments

Your advisor will:
- Help you determine whether you are eligible for emergency funding
- Support you with an emergency bursary application, if appropriate
- Recommend other financial assistance options that may be available to you
